DOT Issues Regulatory Guidance Prohibiting Texting While Driving for Commercial Drivers

On January 26, 2010, U.S Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced federal guidance to expressly prohibit texting by drivers of commercial vehicles such as large trucks and buses.  The prohibition is effective immediately and is the latest in a series of actions taken by the Department to combat distracted driving since the Secretary convened a national summit on the issue in September 2009.

IOM Recommends N95 Respirators to Protect Health Care Workers From H1N1 Flu

On September 3, 2009, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released its much anticipated report, Respiratory Protection For Healthcare Workers In The Workplace Against Novel H1n1 Influenza A:  A Letter Report. The study was requested by the CDC and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The study panel supports the CDC recommendation that healthcare workers wear fit-tested N95 respirators, rather than surgical masks, to guard against respiratory infection by the virus.

OMB Clears Draft Hazard Communication NPR for Publication

The Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, within the White House Office of Management and Budget, announced on August 25, 2009 that it has completed its review of OSHA's draft Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPR) amending the Hazard Communication Standard to be consistant with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). OSHA is on track to publish the NPR in the Federal Register for public comment by the October 2009 target date listed in the current Regulatory Agenda.
