Report: Job Safety Regulations Save Lives, Cost Less than Predicted

Public Citizen, a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization, issued a report August 15 examining the costs and benefits of four OSHA rules plus the Mine Safety Act. The ten-page report, "Regulations at Work: Five Rules that Save Workers' Lives and Protect their Health," (attached below) concludes that these occupational safety and health regulations have saved thousands of lives, often led to more efficient processes, and in one case ended up costing less than OSHA expected.

OSHA Combustible Web Chat Transcripts and Blog Available

Severe Violators Enforcement Program Now Effective

On June 18, OSHA announced that the Severe Violators Enforcement Program directive (previously published in draft) is now effective.  The agency announced in April that it was implementing the program to focus on employers who continually disregard their legal obligations to protect their workers.

OSHA’s SVEP focuses enforcement efforts on employers who willfully and repeatedly endanger workers by exposing them to serious hazards.

OSHA Schedules Combustible Dust Stakeholder Meetings in Chicago

OSHA has scheduled more informal stakeholder meetings to continue soliciting comments and suggestions for protecting workers from combustible dust hazards in the workplace. This set of meetings is the third in a series addressing combustible dust hazards.  They will be held in Chicago, IL on April 21, 2010.  (The first meetings were held in Washington, DC in December 2009; the second in Atlanta, GA in February 2010.)

At a March 3 Informal Public Hearing in Washington, DC, ORC Senior Vice President Frank White and EHS Networks Director Ann Brockhaus voiced support for OSHA’s proposal to align its Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).

OSHA Announces Stakeholder Meetings on Combustible Dust

OSHA has announced two additional informal stakeholder meetings on the workplace hazards of combustible dust. OSHA plans to use the information gathered at these meetings in developing a proposed standard for combustible dust.

OSHA Announces Stakeholder Meetings on Combustible Dust

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has announced that it will hold two stakeholder meetings on December 14, 2010, to discuss combustible dust workplace hazards.  According to the notice published in the Federal Register on November 10, the stakeholder meetings will be conducted as a group discussion on views, concerns, and issues surrounding the hazards of combustible dust. To facilitate as much group interaction as possible, formal presentations will not be permitted.

OSHA Will Publish ANPR on Combustible Dust on Oct. 21

In a press release issued October 20, 2009, OSHA announced it will publish an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on issues associated with Combustible Dust in the Federal Register on October 21.  The public will have 90 days to submit comments.
