An Introduction to Who We Are and What We Do

ORC Worldwide (ORC) is an international management consulting firm offering professional assistance in human resources management for industrial, nonprofit, and public organizations.

Soon after passage of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, ORC formed its OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH GROUP composed of senior Corporate managers of occupational safety and health. The focus of the Group is to promote effective occupational safety and health programs and practices in business, and to facilitate industry understanding of and input into national occupational safety and health policy and program decision making.

Four groups have been formed within the main OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH GROUP to facilitate in-depth discussion of particular types of occupational safety and health issues.

  • The ORC OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH PHYSICIANS GROUP includes member company medical directors and physicians who explore a broad range of issues affecting the practice of occupational medicine.

  • The ORC OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH LAWYERS GROUP includes company attorneys who are concerned with the legal implications of occupational safety and health regulations.

  • The ORC INTERNATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY FORUM addresses global issues of concern to multinational corporations and acts as a focal point for the collection and exchange of information about global safety and health matters.

  • The ORC EH&S Executive Business Issues Forum allows senior corporate EH&S executives to address critical strategic business issues in a candid, confidential setting.

ORC has expanded its services to address business needs in two additional areas:

  • Parallel in concept to the Occupational Safety and Health Group, the WESTERN OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH GROUP monitors and participates in regulatory activities affecting companies based or operating in the western United States. In addition to maintaining a link between federal OSHA and member companies, ORC Worldwide consultants work with member company representatives and state agency personnel to ensure that agencies receive sufficient information to make informed decisions on issues affecting workplace environment, health, and safety.

  • ORC Worldwide has also established an ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP to provide a forum for corporate managers with environmental responsibilities to examine environmental issues and to help shape national environmental policies that are increasingly a critical element of corporate management decisions.

The activities of all of these ORC Groups are based on the premise that protecting human health and the environment and providing safe and healthful working and environmental conditions are the mutual concern of employers, employees, government agencies, and local communities. These Groups provide a link between member companies and the appropriate government agencies including: the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

ORC staff, sometimes accompanied by technical experts from member companies, have frequent discussions with OSHA, NIOSH, EPA, and other government agencies about needs and issues regarding occupational safety and health and the environment. In addition, ORC testifies at public hearings on proposals for new or amended standards and provides oral and written presentations to government advisory committees. Working relationships are also maintained with voluntary standards organizations, environmental and safety and health professional groups, and major industry and trade associations.

ORC staff members and representatives of member companies maintain contact on issues of concern by correspondence, telephone, and regularly scheduled Group meetings. At meetings, company representatives exchange information with each other, with representatives of federal and state regulatory agencies, and with invited experts from the occupational safety and health or environmental disciplines. The meetings also provide opportunities for informal benchmarking through the exchange of information about safety and health and environmental management practice. Member companies are entitled to telephone consultation with ORC staff on technical compliance and policy issues affecting their operations. ORC also provides members with up-to-date information about safety and health developments through frequent mailings and by electronic means.
